When Wrestling 411 set up this interview with Barry Davis, we were expecting to get some comments about the discussion at the NWCA Convention focusing on the potential shift in seasons. What we got was a very spirited discussion about some issues Davis found important for building the image of wrestlers, wrestling and coaches.
Wrestling 411’s Jason Bryant talked with Davis about issues brought up at the NWCA Convention as well.

Michigan head wrestling coach Joe McFarland is known for getting some of the best out-of-state talent to come to Ann 
Arbor to wrestle for the Wolverines. But with the new coaching landscape in the Big Ten — Tom Ryan at Ohio State, Cael Sanderson at Penn State, Jim Heffernan at Illinois — recruiting just got a little tougher.
Wrestling 411 spoke with McFarland about his success as a recruiter and how he plans to compete in a tough Big Ten wrestling conference. The former Wolverine also talked about his rivalry with Barry Davis, winning a World silver medal in 1986, and John Smith winning six World and Olympic titles in a row.

It was a turnaround in a couple of matches. We won ‘84 and we didn’t give up bonus points at one. It came down to one match there.
We’re getting better. We’re not there yet, but we’re getting better. Rutt had a good win to get back on track a little bit.

I think they do a heck of a lot better job than what it sounds like I’m telling them during the match.

Call stalling. Because what it does is it makes everyone more aggressive and the better man’s going to win that way. The guy’s stalling, just call it. It’ s more exciting for the fans and everybody else.

It would be the weigh-in procedures and basically how they have done a disservice to nutrition in this sport.

Stalling calls. Make the guys wrestle more. That’s all. It’s the best sport going right now. A lot of action. It’s such a good thing now. You don’t need to change much of it, just make guys wrestle.

A not-so-short drive over to Madison, Wis., gave Wrestling 411’s Kyle Klingman the opportunity to talk with Badgers head coach Barry Davis about the upcoming college season.
Davis was a three-time NCAA Champion under Dan Gable at Iowa and has been the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers since 1993-94 season and has compiled a dual meet record of 155-100-10.
