The Newport News Apprentice School is the most unique wrestling experience in the country. Why? The small trade school is owned by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding and has been fielding athletics teams since the days it was founded.
One of the winningest programs in the school’s history has been its wrestling program. Bruce Shumaker, a longtime high school coach in Virginia took over the Apprentice program. The Hall of Famer follows Jeff Rusak, Sean Gray, Mike Clayton, Keith Mourlam and Kevin Darkus as coaches at the school.
The Buliders won the NCWA Championship for the first time in 2009 in front of a pro-Apprentice crowd in Hampton, Va.
