Would you listen to someone who loves to rock a mullet, paint their face and wear spandex when it comes to wrestling advice?

You would if the spandex-wearing, face-painting, mullet-sporting Jake Herbert was giving it.

Herbert, 23, returned to Division I wrestling this season after spending much of the 2007-08 year working towards making the Olympic Games in freestyle. But as Herbert fell short of his lofty goals in 2008, he returned to Northwestern’s Evanston, Ill., campus with goals of returning to the top of the podium.

Wrestling needs more people like Jake Herbert, one of those guys that everyone likes regardless of school affiliation. Can’t wait to see him and Pucillo live in a couple weeks.

Yes, Herbert is not only fun to see wrestle…and dominate…but interesting to watch warm up before a match and “warm down” afterwords. I was at yesterday’s Gopher-Wildcat match and after the great Precin-Sanders 125-lb match, Jake spent a lot of time with Brad on the bike and you could sense that both of them may well make the NCAA finals.
The Pucillo matchup will be very interesting, but I don’t think Jake can be stopped this year, and that match may very well be the first of three in the next six weeks with Big Ten and NCAA finals.
I also saw Herbert interviewed on t.v. after his Midlands win, and was impressed by his humbleness and ability to express himself.
