It’s been a trend in college wrestling to have less than stellar wrestling when two highly-ranked teams collide in mid-season duals. Instead of following the trend, Minnesota State and Upper Iowa gave the crowd at the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn., plenty to be excited about as the host Mavericks, ranked third in Division II, topped Heath Grimm’s Peacocks 29-12 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup.
With six of the 10 wrestlers in Wednesday’s match ranked nationally and a total of 18 wrestlers ranked in the NSIC, the outcome wasn’t easily predetermined, but for Mavericks coach Jim Makovsky, his squad attacked and put pressure on their opponents throughout the night.
