I've seen very big matches decided by the personal judgement of the refs as regards what is a stall, when to warn, when to award points. It's a mess. No way can the referees make this kind of call consistent, even with teams of refs reviewing the calls. I like Cael Sanderson's ideas on how to pre-empt stalling calls - interpose something more valuable & you never get to the stall. His suggestions don't make a complete solution, but they would be a good start. Eliminating the escape point? I don't like this one. How about this: award 3 points for every takedown after the 2nd accomplished by the same competitor?
